Overview
Hashima Island, commonly known as Gunkanjima or โBattleship Island,โ is a small, abandoned island located approximately 15 kilometers from Nagasaki. Once a thriving coal mining facility, it was home to over 5,000 residents at its peak. The island was abandoned in 1974 following the decline of the coal industry, leaving behind a hauntingly desolate landscape of crumbling concrete structures. In recent years, Gunkanjima has gained attention as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a unique tourist destination.
